Azoychka is a Russian heirloom tomato brought to the United States by Seed Savers Exchange co-founder Kent Whealy in the mid-1990s, valued for its smooth yellow fruit and prolific, early harvest.

Variety details

Distinguishing Traits

Azoychka bears smooth, oblate fruit that ripen to a true yellow — not golden or orange — with bright yellow flesh inside, growing on plants with ordinary, non-potato leaf foliage. For such an early-fruiting variety, the fruit run good sized, around eight ounces apiece. Its flavor carries a rich, pleasantly sweet note with a hint of citrus, yet the fruit also shows a pleasant tartness that more closely approximates the flavor of a good red tomato, without the typical sweet or fruity taste associated with yellow-fruited varieties.

Uses

Azoychka is great for canning, slicing, or salads.

Performance

Azoychka is a prolific producer, capable of yielding forty to fifty tomatoes per plant. It also ripens unusually early for its type, counted among the first tomatoes to mature in the garden.

Historical Origin

Azoychka traces to the seed-collecting travels of Kent Whealy, co-founder of the Seed Savers Exchange, who came upon the variety at the Bird Market in Moscow, Russia. He brought it back to the United States, and it first became available to seed savers and U.S. growers in 1995.
