Variety details
Distinguishing Traits
Celebrity is a semi-determinate tomato that grows as a bushy plant with compound, regular leaves. Its vines bear clusters of medium-large, red globe-shaped fruit valued for their flavor, with firm interior flesh and a bright red skin that resists cracking. Individual tomatoes typically weigh 8–10 ounces, placing them solidly in the medium-large range for slicing tomatoes. Vigorous growth and broad disease resistance let the plant keep setting fruit across a range of temperatures, and it has built a reputation for staying dependable even when growing conditions are less than ideal.
Uses
Celebrity serves as a dependable, all-purpose slicing tomato suited to everyday uses such as sandwiches, snacking, and bruschetta.
Performance
Celebrity is classified as a mid-season variety, and well-tended plants can keep bearing over a harvest period lasting several weeks, with vigorous plants producing a substantial crop of tomatoes. Although its plants stay relatively compact, they continue setting fruit until frost rather than finishing all at once. The variety combines resistance to verticillium wilt, both common races of fusarium wilt, several nematode species, and tobacco and tomato mosaic viruses, along with resistance to Alternaria stem canker, giving it a broad enough disease shield to remain productive in both warm and cool conditions and to perform reliably even for beginning growers.
Historical Origin
Celebrity is a hybrid tomato, not an heirloom, bred using natural breeding techniques by Colen Wyatt at PetoSeed, later part of Seminis, and introduced in the 1980s. It was judged by horticultural experts and received the All-America Selections award in 1984, recognized at the time for characteristics that set it apart from other tomato cultivars.
