Cream Form is a cultivar of Akebia quinata, the chocolate vine, distinguished by its cream-white, night-fragrant flowers and vigorous twining habit.
Variety details
Distinguishing Traits
Cream Form bears cream white flowers that are especially fragrant at night, a departure from the species' typical purple-brown blooms. The plant itself grows as a vigorous, hardy, semi-evergreen twiner, climbing readily wherever it is given support.
Uses
This form is valued for quickly covering pergolas and trellises with its delicately scented cream flowers. Later in the season it also produces edible fruit with a sweet pulp, giving the climber an ornamental role through summer and a fruiting one by season's end.
Performance
Cream Form tolerates a range of soil types, making it adaptable to different garden conditions. Its flowers, however, can be damaged by frost, so despite the plant's overall hardiness it performs best when grown against a wall for extra protection.
