King of the North is a bell pepper cultivar suited to cool-season and northern growing conditions, producing blocky, thick-walled fruits that ripen from green to red and sweeten as they mature.

Variety details

Distinguishing Traits

King of the North bears blocky, thick-walled peppers with three to four lobes on sturdy, upright plants that produce good yields even in short, cool seasons. The fruit begins dark green and ripens to a vivid red, developing a crisper, sweeter flavor as it matures. Growers describe the yields as both good and heavy, with fruit size falling in the medium range typical of blocky bell types.

Uses

King of the North suits fresh eating as well as frying and stuffing, with a crisp texture that carries into cooked dishes alongside the flavor that sweetens as the fruit ripens. It is also described as working well cooked in any recipe or eaten raw.

Performance

Selection work has kept King of the North fast to mature, with fruits ripening to red even in short growing seasons. Fruit set is inhibited by hot weather, though, with delayed sets in warm climates leading growers to recommend it mainly for gardens north of the 42nd parallel or high-altitude locations with cool nights. Prolonged dry, hot weather can also cause blossom drop.
