Variety details
Distinguishing Traits
Galine bears a classic bell-shaped, purple-black Italian-style fruit that sets early and dependably even in northern growing conditions. Its flesh cooks up mild with a pudding-like texture. Fruits also run larger than many comparable varieties, averaging about a pound each, and growers have found the plant less fussy to grow than Rosa Bianca.
Performance
Trial evaluations conducted by growers June Zellers and the late Adam Tomash found Galine to be the earliest producer among the eggplants they tested, with a flavor that came close to rivaling Rosa Bianca, their top pick. Grown in a high tunnel, one trialer described the results as phenomenal, with plants reaching four feet tall and yielding about five pounds of fruit each.
