Variety details
Distinguishing Traits
Green Magic produces tightly packed, blue-green crowns noted for their uniformity and flavor. The compact, roughly two-foot plant carries a dark green, semi-domed head six to eight inches across, built from a medium-small, tight bead structure. It shows good tolerance to powdery mildew and some resistance to downy mildew, while also sending up abundant side shoots and handling shifts between cool and warm weather with ease. Once the main head is cut, the plant keeps producing evenly sized shoots, allowing growers to bring in two more rounds of harvest afterward, a combination of traits that helped it earn the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Uses
Green Magic's compact plants grow well in containers, giving the variety a role beyond the open garden bed.
Performance
Green Magic holds up well through summer heat, staying in the field longer thanks to improved hybrid bolt resistance. Its tolerance for fluctuating temperatures also lets it double as a fall or spring crop rather than a strictly warm-season one. That same heat tolerance keeps the heads from bolting to seed prematurely, preserving texture and flavor in the harvested crowns.
